Unfortunately the lodge records are incomplete and therefore very little information is available.

In 1868 the Old Globe Hotel had lost its reputation and the area in which it was situated was developing into almost a slum. This was at a time when the Old Globe numbered amongst its members Lord Londesborough, Sir George Cayley, E. S. Cayley, the M.P. for the Borough, The Honorable W. H. F. Denison, later Lord Raincliffe, and other distinguished gentlemen. A number of the members expressed their opinion that Globe Street and the environment of the hotel were not a fit and decent quarter of the town for gentlemen to meet in. They broke away from the Old Globe Lodge to form a new lodge "The Denison" to meet in the newly opened Grand Hotel.

It was on 30 December 1868 that the Grand Lodge of England issued the Warrant for a new lodge to be formed in Scarborough. It was to be known as the Denison Lodge numbered 1248. The lodge was named after William Henry Forester Denison, the second Baron Londesborough, later the Earl of Londesborough. Viscount Raincliffe, his son, the second Viscount Raincliffe, was Master of the Denison Lodge in 1891. The consecration ceremony was held in the Grand Hotel and they continued to meet there until the early 1880's, with a short spell at the Londesborough Rooms, when the then three Scarborough lodges acquired the property on St Nicolas Cliff. After it's Dedication to Freemasonry it became our present Masonic Hall in 1884. The Denison Lodge met there for the first time 5 November 1884 and has continued to hold its meetings there until this day.

The Denison Lodge celebrated its Centenary meeting on the 29 January 1969 at the Grand Hotel. The Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, The Most Honourable The Marquise of Zetland, T.D., D.L., presented the Centenary Warrant to the Worshipful Master, W.Bro. William Greaves. The tickets cost 35 shillings exclusive of wine.
